This time of the year feels good because after total moral decay and gluttony (well, in my case that is), it feels as if you can start afresh with a shiny new diary, crisp new wall calendar and a sheet dotted with bullet points about how to become a better person. The New Year resolutions list that is - and this year I've broken mine down into the major life-changing ones (not telling until they happen) and the other resolves. Some of my 2012 aims are:
*Get our home furnished by end of February - ok, so it feels wonderful being in our new home but, after years of renting, it's the first time we've had to find our own furniture...*gulp*. We're planning to hire a lorry and hit the markets for unique one-off pieces.
*I want to fit back into my wedding dress...seriously, I've been tempted to see if it still fits three years on and I have a horrible feeling it won't - so I'm going to hit the gym, starting with a 1-2-1 tomorrow. Oh yeah!
*Get a photo shoot with my man - three years of being married (and ten of being engaged) and I have a pathetic amount of photos together. It's the curse of being a photographer and preferring to hide behind the lens. Here's planning to add to my own memory box!

Carl Williams, Head Chef at Man Group, has been named Lexington’s chef of the year at LexChef 2011.

This was such a fascinating shoot for me; I felt like I was stepping into the scary world of Master Chef. In it's fifth year, Lexington Catering run an annual chef competition open to chefs around the country and not only is there a judging panel, but they have a discerning audience of food lovers as well who get to vote for their favourite dishes.

I'm so excited to have shot Warwick's portrait for Size Matters Not - the book that inspired the latest Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant project; a spoof documentary about an egocentric actor with little man complex played by none other than the fabulous Warwick Davis.

Back in June, it was announced that Sting, Johnny Depp and Steve Carell are all due to appear when it debuts tonight at 9.30pm on BBC Two. However, since then, there's been more celebrities have come on board. These include none other than the one and only Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Carell, Cat Deeley, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Les Dennis, Keith Chegwin and Barry from Eastenders.

They said it couldn't be done. They told us to get a surveyor. They said we'd pay over the odds. They were (and I say this with MUCH relief)...wrong. Thanks to my dad as foreman and a brilliant team of builders (VDK Building and Construction Ltd), we are now very nearly ready to move. The boxes are packed (well, stuffed to the brim), the date is set for the end of November and I'm about to be carried over the threshold (properly this time, no steps up to a dilapidated first floor flat).

My Week's Album Round-Up

The amount of times a couple says to me, "we thought we'd save some cash by doing our own album". Then, on their first anniversary, I hear back from them, jokingly admitting that they never did get round to doing it. And, in the meantime, their most treasured memories - be it of their wedding, a big family celebration, their kid's birthday bash or an engagement shoot - are all stored somewhere on a hard drive, tucked away and never really looked at. Now - I do understand the temptation. After all, there's a selection of online suppliers and shops offering photo books. Click below to read on, *rant alert*

I always think - why spend the money on the photography in the first place if you're going to have a batch of images that aren't the correct colour (what you see on your screens and how something prints are two entirely different stories), that aren't placed on acid-free paper (unless the printer guarantees this type of paper, ink will fade in time), where the layout is limited to the suppliers' templates (being able to run an image, for example, over two pages right to the edge of the paper is something most suppliers don't even offer!) and, in the case of a traditional album, where you're limited to bog standard gloss or matt paper. In four words, DON'T DO IT! Go the extra length and pay your photographer or a graphic designer and make sure your album is one that gets passed down the generations.

Westminster Kingsway Graduation

Shooting this graduation ceremony brought back lots of memories - being excited to "get out there", being nervous to "get out there" and being hugely relieved at not tripping up on collecting the scroll. Graduating is such an emotional point in time and I hope to have captured that sense of one chapter ending and another beginning, of student friendships, of the anticipation and excitement, as well as that feeling of pride. Purple Your People

When learnpurple asked me to create a new series of profiles for their website, I was really excited for two reasons: learnpurple were the first company to give me a photography assignment straight out of Uni and being called back felt like coming full circle. After all, it's the best compliment to be asked back! The second reason was that I like a challenge - I was asked to shoot their profiles outdoors, near the offices in Covent Garden and with a learnpurple "twist". Rather than going for the square which is overrun at best, and being wary of the English weather, I chose Drury Lane and not only is the theater a covered spot but the fantastic pillars came in very handy indeed :-) And note: everyone made an effort to wear something purple - from necklaces to nail polish and from tops to purple ties!

It was a real privilege to photograph students at the Victoria Centre of Westminster Kingsway College; the first UK culinary school founded a century ago. Famous graduates have included Jamie Oliver amongst others and if you haven't tried it, do visit the Vincent Rooms at Victoria, SW1, where the future award winning chefs are cooking up a storm and serving three-course gourmet meals at a fraction of the price. And you'll be in good company - the day I shot at Westminster Kingsway, How-Clean-Is-Your-House star Aggie MacKenzie was enjoying her meal at the restaurant. Here's a short clip - Enjoy!

My Photos Make It Across The Pond!!

I'm chomping at the bit - my first book photography has made it to the States as John Wiley & Sons are bringing out an American edition of Size Matters Not; The Extraordinary Life and Career of Warwick Davis. And it includes new photos on the inside!! Warwick was my childhood hero - I can't recount the number of times I've watched Willow - so meeting him in person was incredible. Even if you've not seen any of his films (and that would surprise me as he's been in Star Wars, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Harry Potter and Narnia), the story of his life at 3"6' is one big (sorry Warwick!) adventure. My nephew's first visit to London

This is my nephew, Sammy, ready for his first flight to the Big Smoke. Unfortunately, we're separated by 5hrs of ocean, so I've got to document his growing up as best I can. I have to admit I can rarely put my camera down when he's around for fear of missing the next best moment ever. Sammy now points at cameras and says, "Nina!"

I will forever be grateful to my parents, especially my dad with his trusted Pentax Spotmatic for documenting mine and my four sibling's childhood - thanks to their efforts, generations to come will see my mum's love as she held us for the first time, our tantrums, wobbly first steps, graduation pride and chaotic Christmases. It being beautiful Brecon, high in the Welsh hills, rain wasn’t exactly a surprise. There’s a reason why those fields are so green. But as Kate stepped outside her front door, escorted by her dad, a wedding miracle occurred - the sun exploded from behind dark clouds and stayed with her for the rest of the day.

Tom and Kate’s wedding was perfect from start to finish, although I did cause a minor sensation when one of the church candles briefly set my hair on fire! Not one for the album :-)

If I got a dime every time someone told me "I hate having my photo taken" and "I don't photograph well", I'd be a millionaire by now :-) I think portrait sessions are fun and it's a great opportunity for both photographer and sitter to come up with some fresh ideas, poses and, most importantly, a profile photo which will (hopefully) be used lots!

The best advices to any sitter: let rip, throw poses, don't be afraid "to look stupid" (there is no such thing!) - the best portrait shoots (IMHO) are the ones where a spontaneous feel is captured. I got the BIGGEST thrill when Sue (below) suddenly exclaimed, "that's me, you've really captured what I'm about!"

Get me to the ZOO on time!

Well, this was a bit different – a wedding at London Zoo - at 8am on a Friday! I had to drag myself out of bed at 5.30am to be on time for this very unusual wedding.

It was hosted by Absolute Radio’s Breakfast Show, who’d been running a competition all week to find a couple who were crazy enough to want to get married first thing in the morning - on live radio – and with a million people listening as they exchanged vows.

On the plus side, British Telecom was paying for everything. This included the venue, dress, suits, rings, cake and the honeymoon, not bad at all!

After the breakfast team had narrowed the hundreds of applicants down to three finalists, the winning pair were chosen yesterday by public vote. Rikki and Rachel clinched the prize by the narrowest of margins.

Rikki told their suitably unusual love story to breakfast show host Christian O’Connell, who was dressed for the occasion in a monkey – sorry, I mean morning suit.

“I fell in love with Rachel when we were just fifteen but we split up and after school we lost touch – for ten years. I then found her on Facebook.”

“Did you poke her?” Christian asked. “What? That’s a Facebook term isn’t it?” “I checked she was single,” Rikki said, “and when we finally met up it was as if we’d never been apart.”

Aw!

London Zoo provided some very special guests for the big day, including Komodo dragons, a South American raccoon called Kinkaju, a pair of giraffes and a llama.

When the young female keeper brought the raccoon in for a closer look, Christian asked: “I know we’ve only just met but can I stroke your Kinkaju?”

As soon as the ceremony was over, the champagne started to flow and Mr and Mrs Parker admitted they were pretty shell-shocked about the whole affair, which, Rikki said, felt “surreal”.

“Yes, it was strange looking across the room during the ceremony and seeing that animal over there,” Rikki said. “That’s Ritchie, our producer, steady on,” Christian said. “Although, to be fair - “. Ritchie happened to be halfway through munching his fourth Danish pastry at that moment.

After chatting to Christian, there was a short wedding disco before the bouquet toss (enthusiastically caught by newsreader Maggie Doyle) and one final toast and that was it. Mr and Mrs Parker were off to spend their honeymoon in the Maldives, what a start to married life…

Right, I’m knackered, time for a cuppa and a lie down.

Shooting Stars

Westminster Kingsway College is an amazing place. With a brand new recording studio, a top chef school, and all powered by Macs I wish I’d had the chance to study there! I haven’t checked out their professional photography department but I’m sure it’s second to none.
I’ve done a few event photography shoots for Kingsway recently, including the opening of the recording studios by former student-turned-top-pop-starlet Eliza Doolittle.

These portraits of the some of the College’s beautiful bright young things were shot for Kingsway's new prospectus. They quickly turned the tables on me and filmed me during the shoot using their phones. They were sharing the experience with their friends online before I’d even finished taking their photographs.

Own That Dress!

Now this was right up my street, a vintage wedding shoot in East London. My beautiful model, Lillian Tibihikira, was amazing - she really knows how to make that dress hers!

Massive thanks also to Dana Bolton from VintageBridalDesigner.com who supplied the vintage wedding gown. So many brides are looking for one-off, extra special dresses these days and I think this one is going to make one lucky girl very, very happy.

The shoot took place in an enormous factory-style apartment in Hoxton, London, which is owned by a famous photographer.

I just had to share these photographs with you. I shot these portraits at a school in Richmond in southwest London during a dress rehearsal of their nativity play. I was in photography heaven with these little angels!

Sadly, I had to dash off much too soon, as I had a wedding to shoot on the other side of London. I hope the play was alright on the night...

Size Matters Not!

This was a real treat. I spent a whole afternoon shooting portraits of Warwick Davis, the world’s most famous little person (3ft6”) and superstar actor in a London studio. The photographs were for the cover of Warwick’s autobiography, Size Matters Not and it’s a top class story. Warwick’s a very funny, charming and professional man and was up for anything to get the perfect photograph – even swinging from an iron bar at one point! This swinging picture photograph ended up on the book’s spine, so it looks as though Warwick’s hanging from the ‘T’ of ‘Not’.

Warwick showed me some of the photographs from his life that were going into the book and, while I’m sure most people would be interested to see him with Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas, I was most interested in his wedding photographs. With a mixture of normal-sized and little guests (his best man was 6ft3”), it must have been quite a challenge for the photographer!

Incidentally, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are writing, producing and directing a comedy show for the BBC starring Warwick. Called Life’s Too Short, Warwick stars as a darker version of himself (think The Office but with David Brent as a little person). It’s sure to be a massive hit.

I’m hoping to take some portraits of Karl Pilkington (the now infamous friend of Ricky and Stephen and the star of An Idiot Abroad) for a project in the New Year. If I do, I’ll post a selection of photographs of the round-headed one here…

Against the Grain

This week an exhibition featuring my documentary work opened at the New End Gallery in Hampstead, North London (their previous exhibition showcased the work of the famous photographer Storm Thorgerson who has shot dozens of infamous album covers for everyone from Pink Floyd to Muse).

The title of the exhibition was Against the Grain; it featured several experienced London portrait photographers who look through the lens with a ‘different’ eye.

For the opening night I spent a rare evening without my camera round my neck and an event photographer hired for the evening grabbed this fun shot of me. I had the best night; it was a truly wonderful experience seeing lots of people enjoying (I hope!) and discussing my photos.
